3. Liner Notes: A Historical Perspective

Notes by Irving Kolodin

It's a long road, with many turnings, that has led Benny Goodman from an eminent position in the world of jazz to the Berkshire Festival where he recorded these works during July of 1956. Actually, the turnings have been much longer than the road itself, having had their beginnings more than 50 years ago in some cases, and in others, more than anybody has ever calculated, in the history of music. Goodman's interest in Mozart—from which are derived the two works on this record—is not an isolated phenomenon. He and others from whom he has derived encouragement, such as the late William Kroll, the founder of the National Broadcasting Company's String Quartet, have played an informal chamber music series that he initiated in 1937. This series was a significant part of the Berkshire Festival's musical offerings.

There was something of a novelty interest in the phenomenon of a jazz musician playing Mozart. That is to say, he was described as "formal" or "classical" music, which was not his usual genre. However, Goodman's dedication to the music and his ability to interpret it authentically were widely recognized. His performances were not merely a "catch-as-catch-can" approach but a deep engagement with the material, demonstrating his versatility and profound musicality.

At any point since then, whenever an encounter with Goodman occurred, it was likely that he was working with some "classical" musician. This was not a sudden development but a gradual evolution of his musical interests. His involvement with classical music was a testament to his broad musical tastes and his desire to explore different genres beyond jazz.

Undoubtedly there was a time when Goodman's playing of Mozart was to be regarded as something of a curiosity. The silly part of that is, of course, that Goodman was always "across" (in the sense of thorough) when playing jazz, and he was no less "across" when playing Mozart. For the days of qualification are behind him.

At the same time it is worth noting that this was all the more true in the case of the Clarinet Concerto, where Goodman's performance brought a fresh perspective to a classically trained musician. His ability to blend his unique style with the classical demands of Mozart's compositions made these recordings particularly noteworthy.
